From the forests and folk traditions of Finland, musicians Petra Käppi and Olli Sippola bring a rich world of songs, stories and traditional instruments to Tradoodle. Through a playful and participatory concert, children will be invited to sing, listen, explore and make music together – sharing in Finnish music, culture and language, and discovering the connections that can be made through music across cultures.
Petra is an ethnomusicologist, musician and experienced music educator, and Artistic Director of Finland’s Culture Cooperative Uulu, where her work spans children’s music, folk and world music, and participatory arts. Her musical and pedagogical practice has also been shaped by extensive study of traditional music and dance in Tanzania. Olli is an accomplished Finnish fiddler rooted in the pelimanni folk tradition and performs with acclaimed ensembles including Luomuduo and Polenta. Luomuduo were awarded first prize in Finland’s 2022 Konsta Jylhä Competition for their interpretations of traditional Finnish fiddle music.
Together, Petra and Olli bring a deep knowledge of Finnish musical traditions alongside a wonderfully open, playful approach to making music with children – and we’re delighted to welcome them to Monaghan as part of an exciting new Finnish-Irish partnership at Tradoodle Festival.
