Dancing in the Treetops (online sean-nós dance, 5+)

In our Dancing in the Treetops workshops, children will experience the thrill of sean nós dancing as they shuffle and stamp their feet to the beat.

Get ready for lots of fun, movement, and laughter, and a chance for children to show off their own brand new fancy footwork!

Join renowned dancer Caoimhe Ní Mhaolagáin in a joyful and insightful introduction into the world of traditional sean nós dancing where each child will have an opportunity to let their personality shine through in their dancing… HUP!

Dancing in the Treetops I

In the first Dancing in the Treetops workshop, Caoimhe will introduce children to the lively moves of sean nós. There will be a focus on the basic beats, taps and rhythms of sean nós dancing.

Dancing in the Treetops II

In the second Dancing in the Treetops workshop, Caoimhe will build on the steps, beats, rhythms and patterns learned in Dancing in the Treetops I. This workshop will focus on the heavier weighted style of steps, repeating the different patterns of dance learned.

Dancing in the Treetops III

In Dancing in the Treetops III, children will experience the thrill of sean nós dancing as they shuffle and stamp their feet to the beat.

In the third Dancing in the Treetops workshop, Caoimhe invites you back to learn a lighter style of dance steps. You will also have an opportunity to practice everything that you have already learned across the Dancing in the Treetops workshops.

 

About Caoimhe Ní Mhaolagáin

Caoimhe Ní Mhaolagáin is Dublin-born musician and dancer. Caoimhe comes from a strong musical background which has contributed hugely towards her music and dance. She is a self-taught sean-nós dancer, who has developed her own distinct, original and traditional style from travelling to workshops and festivals around Ireland.

Caoimhe has established her own dance school ‘Ceol ‘s Cos’, teaching music and dance to all ages on a weekly basis across Dublin. Both dance and music have allowed Caoimhe to travel to many countries worldwide, performing at concert venues and festivals such as Paleo Festival in Switzerland, Viljandi in Estonia and Festivale Interceltique de Lorient in Brittany. She has performed as a finalist of TG4’s Jig Gig, dancing at Oireachtas na Samhna annually and also has won All-Ireland medals at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, Caoimhe has great love for the Irish culture. She also featured on TG4’s ‘Fiche Bliain ag fás’ and was documented for the TG4 series ‘Cúl Stáitse’ in 2018.

Caoimhe has most recently toured with Preab Meadar. The unique steps and dance patterns created rhythms between voice, fiddle and dance are based on the meters of Gaelic poetry and song. The steps and rhythms created were taught to dancers at performances nationwide at venues and festivals such as Cos Cos Festival, the Dock; Carrick on Shannon, and Oireachtas na Samhna in Citywest, Dublin.

Teaching weekly music and dance classes across Dublin to all ages on a weekly basis, Caoimhe loves to embrace and share her passion and grá for our rich Irish culture, dance, music and language.

Curious Creatures I: Let’s Invent Our Very Own Treehouse

Join artist & story-maker Duffy Mooney-Sheppard in her Curious Creatures workshop – Let’s Create a Treehouse

In this workshop, we will imagine living high up in the treetops. What animals and friends will share your new leafy home with? Through drawing, you will design your dream treehouse. Then collaborating with your friends or family you will create a whole treehouse village.

Materials you need:

  • Paper or card of any colours
  • Something to draw or paint with
  • Scissors, Glue or sellotape
  • Optional: Collect some real leaves outside!

Curious Creatures II: Let’s Create a Puppet Butterfly

What if, like a caterpillar, we could curl up into a cocoon for a long sleep and emerge transformed into a butterfly? In this workshop, inspired by the butterflies of all shapes, sizes and colours that flutter by, you will discover how to create a puppet of yourself with flapping butterfly wings.

Materials you need:

  • Paper or card of any colours
  • Something to draw or paint with
  • Scissors
- Glue and sellotape
  • A stick, chopstick or a stick from outside.

Curious Creatures III: Let’s Create an Adventure on a Cloud Book

Join artist & story-maker Duffy Mooney-Sheppard in her Curious Creatures workshop – Let’s Create an Adventure on a Cloud Book

Our imaginations float high in the sky in this workshop! Let’s leap on to a passing cloud and go on a floating adventure. You will find out how to make a picture book with a cover and use your book to draw the story of your bird’s eye view adventure.

Materials you need:

  • 1 A4 paper and 1 A4 card of any colours
  • Something to draw or paint with
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Stapler
  • Optional: String

About Duffy Mooney-Sheppard

Duffy is a visual artist, arts program curator and workshop facilitator. A recent graduate of the MA Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Arts, she is drawn to the process of story-making as a way to explore ideas and share her curiosity about the natural world. With many years of experience working creatively with young people and cultural institutions and schools, she has developed her facilitation methods which are based in playful observation, imagination and telling tall tales.
